Variety of events on Peninsula

The new Port Angeles historic district will dedicated from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.

There will be a band, parade, portrayals of historic figures, vintage cars and an ice-cream social.

In addition, car shows, benefit auctions, lectures, concerts, fishing and gardening events are planned on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

Classic car show

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula Dream Machines will host the third annual Cruzin’ For Cancer Classic Car Show at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

At the car show, the Port Angeles Association of Realtors will hold a Relay For Life Benefit Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Admission to the breakfast is by donation.

Proceeds from the show, which includes food, music and trophies, will benefit Relay For Life.Registration is $20.

‘BASH’ auction

PORT ANGELES — Queens of Angels School will host a “BASH” — Building a Scholastic Heritage — dinner and auction at its gymnasium, 209 W. 11th St., at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Seattle entertainer Pat Cashman — known for his stints on the long-running Seattle sketch comedy show “Almost Live” and gigs as a radio show host and Taco Time pitch man — will serve as auctioneer.

Dinner will be catered by Michael’s Seafood & Steakhouse.

The event, which includes both a silent and live auction, is the Queen of Angels annual fundraising.

Tickets are $40 per person, which includes dinner and a bidding number.

There also will be a no-host bar.

This year’s theme is “Shake, Rattle, and Roll (1950s).”

Masons on trails

PORT ANGELES — The Clallam County Genealogical Society will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a presentation about Masons on emigrant trails Saturday.

The talk will be at 9:45 a.m. in the lower floor of the Museum at the Carnegie, 205 S. Lincoln St.

Jack and Pat Fletcher of Sequim will present “Masons and the Masonic Order on the Emigrant Trails to Oregon.”

The Fletchers researched the Cherokee Trail from Tahlequah in present-day Oklahoma to California in 1849.

They learned about the secret fraternal order and carefully read diaries to trace the movement of several lodges and the establishment of new Masonic chapters.

The Fletchers, who were both raised and educated in Colorado, have written five historical books and are working on a book about the Overland Trail, an emigrant route chosen for migration during the Civil War.

They are presently mapping and documenting Central Overland Trail from Nebraska to Western Nevada for the U.S. Park Service.

Kids’ musician

PORT ANGELES — Northwest musician and children’s songwriter Eric Ode will entertain preschoolers and toddlers at the Port Angeles Library today.

Ode’s program of interactive songs, musical games, finger plays and movement will be presented at 10:30 a.m. at the library at 2210 S. Peabody St.

Using puppets, guitar, a flannel board and other props, Ode helps children build vocabulary and letter knowledge.

The program is funded by the Port Angeles Friends of the Library.

Garden party

PORT ANGELES — The Fifth Street Community Garden will hold a grand opening celebration Saturday.

The garden is located one block west of the corner of Peabody and Fifth streets, across from Port Angeles City Hall.

Free organic gardening classes will begin at 11 a.m.

A community party, with food and music, will begin at 3 p.m.

Garden plots are still available.

Cost is $35 for a 110-square-foot plot with water and access to tools and a community of gardeners.

Learn to Fly Day

PORT ANGELES — Chapter 430 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will host a free International Learn to Fly Day at the William R. Fairchild Airport on Saturday.

Attendees will meet near Rite Brothers Aircraft Flight Center at the airport at 9 a.m.

Guests will discover that learning to fly is not as time-consuming or expensive as might be thought, members of the association said.

Pilots, flight instructors and aircraft owners will be available to discuss the possibilities.

Those 18 and older will be able to take free introductory flights.

International Learn to Fly Day was created to invite people interested in the world of flight to discover more by meeting local aviators and discovering the initial steps toward “living the dream” of personal flight.

Massage fundraisers

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College Massage Therapy Program is hosting chair-massage fundraisers to help those in the tornado-ravaged southern United States, with the first to begin this Saturday.

Massages will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Port Angeles Farmers Market at The Gateway transit center at the corner of Front and Lincoln streets.

On Monday, massages will be given from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the atrium at Port Angeles City Hall, 223 E. Fourth St.

Donations of any size are welcome and can be directed to the American Red Cross or AmeriCares.

The Red Cross is providing food and shelter to storm survivors.

AmeriCares delivers medicine, medical supplies and health care to those without health insurance.

Local massage practitioners are joining the Peninsula College students to offer chair massage at the two events.

Shred documents

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles eastside branch of First Federal, 1603 E. First St., will host free community paper-shredding from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Shredding allows people to dispose of sensitive documents in a secure way.

Individuals are encouraged to bring documents for shredding on-site by LeMay Mobile Shredding, a professional shredding company.

Types of documents to bring include old tax returns, account statements or any paperwork with account or social security numbers or other personal information.

First Federal personnel will be on-hand to answer questions and provide information on identity theft.

Arts and Crafts

PORT ANGELES — The Klallam Heritage Center will host an arts and crafts fair Saturday.

The fair will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the heritage center at 401 E. First St.

Indian tacos, fry bread, chili, strawberry shortcake, coffee and water will be available for purchase.

Vendor tables are available for $25. Applications are available at www.elwha.org.

Marine swap meet

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Yacht Club’s annual Marine Swap Meet will be held at the yacht club, 1305 Marine Drive, from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

Outside spaces are available for $10. Space inside the clubhouse costs $15.

Free boat safety inspections by the North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron will be available in the parking lot.

Industrial training

PORT ANGELES —Peninsula College will offer a flagging course Saturday.

The flagging course will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the college at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

It includes classroom instruction and state certification in flagging, traffic control and safety.

Cost for the course, including the textbook, is $65.

Soroptimist fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — Soroptimist-Jet Set will hold its “This One’s for the Girls” annual Soroptimist-Jet Set fundraiser at C’est Si Bon, 23 Cedar Park Drive, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Entertainment will be provided by a Port Angeles High School String Quartet, songs from Teresa Pierce and a performance by local comedian Laura O’Neal.

Adopt-a-trail orientation

PORT ANGELES — An Olympic National Park Adopt-a-Trail orientation session is planned Saturday.

Interested volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the trails shop in the maintenance compound at Olympic National Park headquarters, 600 E. Park Ave.

Additional training sessions will be offered at a later date.

The newly launched program gives local residents, park visitors and community groups a chance to become involved in monitoring and maintaining their favorite trails.

The park is recruiting volunteers interested in serving as trail stewards.

Trails in the North Olympic Peninsula in need of support include Peabody Creek Trail, Cascade Rock and West Elwha, the Lake Crescent trail complex, Hall of Mosses and Spruce Trails in the Hoh Rainforest, Shi Shi Beach and Second Beach.

Saturday’s session is funded through a grant from the National Park Foundation.

Adopt-a-Trail volunteers will receive training on trail maintenance, use of hand tools and trail-building guidelines and techniques in accordance with National Park Service trail standards.

In addition, they will be trained in the identification and removal of invasive exotic plants, use of personal protective equipment and basic safety procedures.

SEQUIM

Kids Fishing Day

SEQUIM — Some 1,800 trout have been released in the pond at the Sequim Water Reuse Demonstration Park on North Blake Avenue just north of Carrie Blake Park for the ninth annual Kids Fishing Day on Saturday.

The North Olympic Peninsula chapter of Puget Sound Anglers is hosting the free fishing day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for children up to 14 years old.

No fishing license is required to participate. Each participant can keep up to two fish.

Toddlers will be able to fish from a separately stocked pool.

Anglers should bring their own pole and bait. Bait and fishing rods also will be supplied by the club.

Children can learn how to clean fish by watching club members clean and ice the trout.

After the event, the pond will be stocked with 1,000 more fish so children can continue to fish through the summer.

The event is presented in coordination with the state Department of Fish & Wildlife and the city of Sequim Public Works Department.

Quality garage sale

SEQUIM — The Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation will hold its fourth annual Quality Garage Sale at 84 E. Quail Lane from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

All proceeds from the sale will go toward programs for indigenous women of Chiapas, Mexico.

Boater ed course

SEQUIM — The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office has teamed with the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe to present a free boater education course Saturday.

The class will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Jamestown S’Klallam Tribal Center’s Heron Hall, 1033 Old Blyn Highway.

The course complies with requirements for a Washington State Boaters Education Card, which is now required for anyone age 35 and younger to operate a powerboat legally.

SEQUIM — A Gala Barn Sale to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula is set today and Saturday.

KSNAP variety show

SEQUIM — “The KSNAP Radio Variety Show: Case of the Missing Dog” will be presented at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The “Snappy Plaers” from Snap, a nonprofit organization serving people with developmental disabilities in Clallam County, will present the show.

The show, a sequel to the group’s 2010 performance, is open to the public.

SEQUIM — The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop will have a half-price sale Saturday.

Tom Flanik will present hands-on instruction for Excel simple spreadsheets, such as those used for home budgets and checkbooks.

This meeting may help Excel users decide if a software upgrade is necessary.

SEQUIM — The Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital will host a Bunco fundraiser today.

AAUW scholarships

PORT TOWNSEND — The AAUW Port Townsend Branch will award scholarships Saturday.

The group will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave.

Group members will award their annual scholarships and meet the women who earned them.

A $1,500 award will be given to a graduating seniors from each Jefferson County high school.

Additionally, the Elmira K. Beyer Scholarship, an award that provides up to $7,500 toward tuition fees, will be handed out.

Thanks to the success of its 2010 Kitchen Tour, the AAUW branch will provide a $2,500 scholarship to the second-place finisher in the Beyer scholarship balloting.

The public is welcome to attend.

Membership to AAUW is open to graduates who hold an associate degree/equivalent or higher from an accredited institution.

Irrigation design talk

PORT TOWNSEND — Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona St., will present a garden workshop on irrigation system design from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

John Barr will demonstrate installation of irrigation systems for all kinds of gardens and landscapes — including drip, mini-sprinklers and T-Tape.

Attendees will learn how to identify the water needs of plants, how to tell which plants are being overwatered and which need more water.

The deadline is Sunday for voting online on videos made by youngsters who want to sail on the Adventuress.

Violin repair benefit

PORT TOWNSEND — A benefit concert to repair a broken violin will be held at the Upstage Restaurant, 923 Washington St., at 7 p.m. today.

Proceeds from the concert will help Port Townsend resident Cliff Self pay the repairs for his broken violin, a family heirloom.

It was damaged when it fell from a shelf in Self’s music studio.

The concert will feature local musicians performing Celtic, Gypsy and old-time fiddle music.

Lions anniversary

The open house will include a slideshow featuring Lions projects through the years, posters and the chance to reminisce with fellow Lions.

LAPUSH — Special student performances are part of today’s final day of a weeklong tribute to Quileute elders with events at the tribal schools.

The performances and giveaways with community elders and guests recognized will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Quileute Tribal School.

Try Therapy Session

FORKS — Therapy Session, a country, folksy, bluesy band from the suburbs of Forks — Beaver, Bear Creek, Sappho and Heckelsville — will be playing some high-spirited tunes as well as a smattering of melodic ballads in Forks tonight.

The free concert will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Forks Extension of Peninsula College, 71 S. Forks Ave.

VICTORIA

New Victoria market

VICTORIA — The first Victoria Downtown Farmers Market will be held in Victoria’s Market Square, 560 Johnson St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The market will continue the fourth Sunday of each month through August.

In addition to fresh produce and locally produced meat, cheese, bread, honey, sprouts, mushrooms, salts and preserves, the market also will feature cooking demonstrations by the Islands Chefs Collaborative.
