Trial date set in killing of ex-Chimacum man

WURTLAND, Ky. — The murder trial of Beryl W. Smith, charged with killing former Chimacum resident Chadd E. Miller, has been scheduled for Jan. 13 in this tiny Ohio River town of about 1,000 residents.

A pretrial conference is set Jan. 9 in Greenup County Circuit Court, County Deputy Clerk Melinda Lawson said Tuesday.

Smith, 34, is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary and first-degree wanton endangerment in connection with Miller’s death.

A Class of 2000 Chimacum High School graduate, Miller, 27, was killed Aug. 7, 2010, in the bedroom of his new girlfriend, Amber Nolan.

Nolan, 33, was Smith’s former girlfriend, and the two had a child.

Smith was arrested without incident standing outside Nolan’s house, holding a handgun.

Miller, who had an elementary-school-age son, had moved to Wurtland 11 days earlier after meeting Nolan on the social networking site MySpace.

Grayson, Ky., lawyer Jennifer Barker, who is representing Smith, did not return a call for comment Tuesday morning.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
