PORT TOWNSEND — Rebecca Wickens, a mother of three, feels the deep pain of families torn apart by Sunday’s South Asian quake-tsunami disaster that has killed at least 117,000.
So much so she is organizing a Jan. 7 downtown Port Townsend music fund-raising event at three venues, proceeds from which will benefit catastrophe victims.
“Since we live close to the water, it really hit home,” said Wickens.
“Imagine the whole town of Port Townsend being washed out to sea . . . and having your friends wash up on the shore.”
Wickens hopes to raise awareness as well as dollars to help victims who she believes might be otherwise left “out of sight, out of mind.”
Wickens is organizing the event with Ben Thomas of Vigilance, a monthly North Olympic Peninsula arts and entertainment publication.
Rock ‘n’ roll venue
Sirens of Port Townsend, 823 Water St., will be the main rock ‘n’ roll venue for the fund-raiser, featuring The Gelding, Love Doll Swingers and The Low Ones.
At The Upstage Theatre & Restaurant, 923 Washington St., Cafe Combo will perform jazz and blues.
Water Street Brewing, 639 Water St., will feature Crown Hillbillies and Matt Sircely.
Suggested donations are $5 to $10, and a hat will also be passed at the event, which starts at 9 p.m. at all venues.
Wickens said proceeds will be sent to the victims in the name of the Port Townsend community rather than as a private organization.
