Tall ships visit Olympic Peninsula

PORT ANGELES — The tall ship Hawaiian Chieftain is expected to join the Lady Washington at City Pier today — and the sails around Port Angeles Harbor will begin.

Three-hour battle sails — with booming cannons and close-quarter maneuvers — are scheduled in Port Angeles at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Tickets are $60 for adults; $50 for students, seniors or active military; and $40 for children 12 and younger.

No more tickets are available online for tonight’s special $35 adventure sail around Port Angeles Harbor aboard the Lady Washington.

Ticket information

For ticket information, visit the ship or contact the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority at 800-200-5239.

Other adventure sails — with demonstrations of tall ship handling, sea shanty singing and maritime storytelling — will be aboard the Hawaiian Chieftain, which will leave City Pier at 10 a.m. Sunday and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 12.

Tickets are $55 for adults; $45 for students, seniors or active military; and $35 for children 12 and younger, who must be accompanied by adults.

Dock-side tours

Tours of the Lady Washington — a full-size wooden replica of a brig that accompanied Capt. Robert Gray’s expedition to the Pacific Northwest in 1788 — are available from noon to 4:30 p.m. today, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday through Monday, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sept. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 11-12.

A $3 donation per person is requested for the walk-on tours.

No reservation is required.

On Tuesday, the Lady Washington will leave for biennial maintenance, haul-out and Coast Guard safety inspection in Port Townsend.

The Hawaiian Chieftain will remain at City Pier in Port Angeles to offer walk-on tours and weekend sailings through Sunday, Sept. 12.

Upon arrival in Port Townsend, the Lady Washington will be hauled out at the Port Townsend Shipyard, and will be available for public inspection during the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival Sept. 10-12.

Maintenance work and inspections are expected to be completed Sunday, Sept. 19.

The Lady Washington will then sail for Grays Harbor and make preparations for her annual trip to California.

The Hawaiian Chieftain will begin sailing Monday, Sept. 13, from Port Angeles to Westport.

Passage can be booked on journeys from Port Angeles to Port Townsend, from Port Townsend to Garys Harbor and from Port Angeles to Grays Harbor.

Launched in 1989, the Lady Washington is the official ship of the state of Washington.

She has appeared in several movies, including the 2003 “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”

The Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical 19th century merchant trader built for trade in the Hawaiian Islands.

For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the ships, see www.historicalseaport.org or phone 800-200-5239.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
