Today is the last day to legally drive on studded tires until Nov. 1.
The state Department of Transportation extended the normal March 31 deadline because of the sudden spate of winter weather — particularly in higher elevations of the North Olympic Peninsula and Western Washington.
Motorists caught using studded tires after midnight tonight could incur a $101 fine.
Studded tires are legal only from Nov. 1 through March 31 every year because of the damage they cause to highways as well as safety considerations, Department of Transportation spokeswoman Lisa Murdock said.
