Sunday Showcase: Are the Olympics’ glaciers melting?

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Are our glaciers melting?

Scientific studies conducted in 1961, 1964 and 1982 say yes.

In fact, the glacial retreat in the Olmpic Mountains seems to mirror that of glaciers around the world, including those in the Cascades, Montana, Alaska and Antarctica.

Many scientists blame the shrinking glaciers on global warming.

But without updated data, scientists can’t be certain what’s going on in the Olympics.

They are hoping studies of the glaciers will resume next year.

“Unfortunately, we are not exactly sure what the changes in Olympic National Park’s glaciers are,” said Bill Baccus, physical science technician for Olympic National Park.

“I would speculate there are glaciers that are listed in our past inventories that no longer exist.”
