Snow caught Jefferson County residents by surprise Wednesday morning, causing schools to cancel classes, buses to make U-turns and drivers to slide into ditches.
According to the National Weather Service office in Seattle, 6 inches to 8 inches of snow fell along Hood Canal and portions of Jefferson County.
Chimacum officials reported about 4 inches of snow fell there. A snowfall amount was not available for Port Townsend.
The heavy, wet snow also brought down numerous branches and trees throughout east Jefferson County, causing power outages to as many as 4,500 homes by midday.
Serious accidents were avoided, though some motorists — caught by the slick conditions — found themselves slipping and sliding on county roads and highways. Some even found themselves stuck.
