SHINE — The Western Washington Growth Management Hearings Board has rejected a motion to reconsider its decision supporting Jefferson County commissioners’ mineral overlay on land leased by Fred Hill Materials Inc.
The site south of Shine is where Fred Hill proposes a mining operation that would move gravel on a conveyor belt to a pier proposed on Hood Canal.
After considering arguments from David Alvarez, county chief civil deputy prosecuting attorney, and Fred Hill attorneys, the hearings board last week denied a motion for reconsideration from a group of Shine-area residents, the Hood Canal Coalition.
The coalition was joined by Olympic Environmental Council and the Jefferson County Green Party in the motion for reconsideration.
“The board has reviewed the petitioners’ motion and finds that it does not change the board’s analysis of the facts before it on compliance,” the hearings board order states.
John Fabian, a Hood Canal Coalition member, said on Monday that the group was considering its options, if any.
“Our chances of getting a successful review of that were slim, but it was just one of those things that you need to do,” Fabian said.
A civil action was one option, said Fabian, “but we need to figure out how to do that if we have to do it.”
