Serenity House to give annual awards in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Awards will be presented during the Serenity House board’s annual meeting Tuesday.

The meeting will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the community room at Tempest Permanent Supportive Housing, 535 E. First St. in Port Angeles.

A highlight of the evening will be presentation of community partnership awards and Sally Garnero Awards to volunteers.

“Volunteers for the agency have so much positive impact,” said Executive Director Kathy Wahto.

“During this last prolonged snowstorm, volunteers were crucial in keeping the street shelter and hygiene center open every day and for extended hours,” she added.

“Staff was great, too, as all our programs were open and staffed throughout the snowy week.”

The annual report for 2011 will be presented at the meeting and will be available after the session by phoning Serenity House at 360-452-7224.

The board also will elect 2012 officers and approve the 2012 agency operating and capital budgets.

Serenity House provided housing, counseling and other services to 3,800 homeless and at-risk people in 2011, Wahto said.

New projects begun during the year include Supportive Services for Veteran Families, the Housing and Essential Needs grant and the Rotary Partnership fund.

Founded in 1982, the nonprofit Serenity House offers 15 programs providing bridge housing, permanent housing and services for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Board members are Brando Blore, president; Brandel Sundt, vice president; Robert Tulloch, treasurer; Patsy Feeley, secretary; and Jennifer Parker, Candace Burkhardt, Karen Hanan and Chris Melly, all of Port Angeles; and Lynn McAleer of Sequim and Al Wang of Joyce.

Light refreshments will be served Tuesday.

The public is welcome.

RSVP by phoning 360-452-7224.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
