SEQUIM — City leaders have agreed to hire a consultant to analyze road needs in and around Sequim so that ever-accelerating development doesn’t blindside city and county planners.
City Council members were scheduled to receive an update on transportation and traffic needs Monday night.
But Councilman Bill Huizinga, one of four members of the city’s transportation committee, said the amount of work to be done is overwhelming.
“We’re way behind,” Huizinga said.
“We were behind before we started, and now we’re . . . behinder.”
At his suggestion, the council approved taking steps to hire a consultant to plow through the needed analysis.
Council members repeatedly have voiced concerns that new developments, particularly on Sequim’s east side, will quickly overload existing roads in the area.
The idea is that “as we approve annexations and preliminary subdivisions and so on, we have already studied the areas they are in,” Huizinga said.
“We want to be able to take a look at what our future needs for roads may be.”
