Sequim man in Seattle hospital after collision

PORT TOWNSEND — A Sequim man was airlifted to a Seattle hospital after another vehicle failed to yield to oncoming traffic on state Highway 104 on Wednesday, the State Patrol said.

Donald Hein, 76, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the 10:30 a.m. wreck at the intersection of state Highway 104 and state Highway 19 about 16 miles south of Port Townsend.

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Hein was being evaluated in the Harborview emergency room and his condition was undetermined.

Hein’s 2014 Suburu Forester struck the 2014 Kia Cadenza driven by Amelia Watkins, 83, of Port Ludlow, after Watkins, who was traveling south on Beaver Valley Road, stopped at the intersection and then drove her car into the eastbound lane of Highway 104 instead of using the merge lane, the State Patrol said.

Watkins and her passenger, 66-year-old Marta Baird of Port Ludlow, were not injured, the State Patrol said.

Watkins was cited for negligent driving, the State Patrol said.

All three people involved were wearing seat belts.

The wreck blocked traffic on eastbound Highway 104 for roughly three hours before the wreckage could be cleared. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
