School levies win in Chimacum, Quillayute Valley; Forks bond issue slightly ahead

The Chimacum School District levy passed with flying colors on Tuesday, as did a school levy on the West End.

With 52.4 percent of voters turning out for the Chimacum election, the vote to fund the schools with $4,176,000 over the course of two years passed by more than 60 percent. Tuesday’s election count found 2,695 votes, or 61.08 percent, approving the levy — which needed a simple majority to pass — and 1,717 votes, or 38.92 percent, rejecting it.

In the Quillayute Valley School District, the two-year $570,000 replacement levy was passing with 68.55 percent, or 970 votes, in favor, and 31.45 percent, or 445 votes opposed.

A companion Quillayute Valley district bond issue, which requires a supermajority of 60 percent yes votes to pass, the $11 million bond to renovate Forks High School was edging ahead with 60.86 percent, or 863 votes, in favor and 39.14 percent, or 555 votes, opposed.

Full details of the election results in both school districts appear in Wednesday’s editions of the Peninsula Daily News.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
