PORT ANGELES — The Gateway International Transportation Center does not have a $300,000 overrun, said Glenn Cutler, Port Angeles public works director, on Thursday.
Cutler, who was leaving town for a short vacation, said that he did not have the paperwork in front of him to give specific cost details and would not be able to provide that information until late next week.
“I’ve got to sit down and look at the books and tell you if it’s a plus or minus or if it zeros out,” Cutler said.
But, he added, “We are within our overall budget allocation on this project.
A story in the Peninsula Daily News on Thursday quoted Roland Ordona, site superintendent for Primo Construction Inc. of Carlsborg, which is building the center, as saying that a two-month delay in the construction of the $13.8 million center on the corner of Front and Lincoln streets will add an estimated $300,000 to the cost of the project.
“The information is inaccurate,” Cutler said.
“Yes, there have been change orders to the project.
“But there have been a number of deductive change orders.
“We are not $300,000 over on this project.”
Primo’s office in Carlsborg directed all inquiries on the matter to Ordona, who could not be reached for more comment on Thursday.
The Gateway center, a joint project of the city of Port Angeles and Clallam Transit, is on East Front Street and East Railroad Avenue between North Lincoln Street and North Laurel Street.
The budget includes several components, Cutler said.
“The construction design and construction management is within the budget allocation for those components,” Cutler said.
“I feel comfortable that we are within the overall budget numbers that we have presented to the [Port Angeles City] Council.”
Cutler confirmed that the expected completion date is in early November.
Ordona said that it is scheduled to be “substantially completed” on Nov. 3.
The original completion date was early September.
Cutler added that, although it was hoped that the west garage would be completed earlier than the rest of the center, “that’s not going to happen.
“It will open the same time as the rest of the project.”
