PORT TOWNSEND — Rain Shadow Woodworks Inc. of Port Townsend made 12 new doors for Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood, Ore.
The new doors are exact duplicates of the originals, which were badly deteriorated after many years of heavy use at the 73-year-old lodge, a National Historic Landmark.
They measure almost three inches thick, three feet wide and just short of eight feet in height.
Traditionally built with full mortise and tenon joints but using epoxy adhesives, the doors are expected to hold up better to the extreme mountain conditions and last longer than the originals.
The materials are all Douglas fir, with Forest Stewardship Council-certified reclaimed floor joists from Pacific
Northwest Timbers as the core material and clear vertical grain covering boards from Edensaw Woods, Ltd.
Both suppliers are located on Seton Road in Port Townsend.
The general contractor for the job was Concept Integrators, Inc. of Vancouver, Wash., which recently completed the new Coast Guard station in Port Townsend.
Rain Shadow Woodworks, licensed since 1978 and formerly known as The Maizefield Co., built the main entryway doors for the Jefferson County Courthouse as a subcontractor for Little and Little Construction, Inc., also of Port Townsend.
Rain Shadow Woodworks is located in the Glen Cove Industrial Park.
In addition to doors, the company designs, fabricates and installs architectural millwork, including staircases, mouldings, cabinets, countertops, paneling and bookcases, with an emphasis on historic preservation work.
