CAPE GEORGE — Prison crews have created a “fire safety zone” between state Department of Natural Resources forest and Cape George.
Natural Resources Fire Operations District Manager Jim Heuring said Thursday that inmate crews have cleared 8 acres of land, forming an underbrush-free buffer 150-feet wide adjacent to Cape George along Goss Road.
Heuring said the clearing will help firefighters protect the community in the event of fire.
The work, completed Wednesday, was performed over five days by 40 inmates from Olympic Corrections Center, located in Jefferson County south of Forks, he said.
