PORT TOWNSEND — Opposition by golfers to building a performing arts center on their favorite links helped push Port of Port Townsend commissioners to propose trading the Port’s Kah Tai Lagoon for the city-owned course.
The land swap idea has been floating around the Port office for a long time, Executive Director Larry Crockett said Thursday, one day after Port commissioners unanimously agreed to seek talks.
Until recently, those dreams were no more than an “audible thought.”
The golfers’ heated opposition in part led to the Port’s commissioners’ decision, he said.
The arts center proposal caused golfers to start a petition drive against non-golf development on the course, officially the Port Townsend Golf Club.
Even though arts center proponents say a final building site hasn’t been decided, about 1,000 golf aficionados have signed the opposition petition.
