An agreement was reached Monday to keep free parking at Fort Worden State Park, Port Townsend Mayor Kees Kolff said Monday night.
Parking will remain free as long as the state Parks Commission receives a certain amount of revenue, Kolff said.
The plan calls for the city of Port Townsend to pay a total of $25,000 during the first two quarters of 2004. Revenues from statewide pass sales at Fort Word and surcharges will likely cover the third quarter payment. If revenue from those sources falls short, up to $5,000 could be taken from the City’s Lodging Tax reserve fund in the second half of the year.
The Port Townsend City Council approved using the lodging tax money, if needed, during its Monday night meeting.
Jefferson County will be asked to help fund the fourth quarter payment. Jefferson County commissioners had previously turned down two requests to provide funding to prevent parking fees being initiated at the popular state park.
