PORT TOWNSEND: City to take control of carousel this week

PORT TOWNSEND — The saga of the Sausalito Carousel continues this week.

City officials plan to take possession of the carousel from Sausalito, Calif., purchased with tax money earmarked to build a pavilion for a different carousel.

City Attorney John Watts said discussions with the Port Townsend Carousel Association’s attorney, Peggy Ann Bierbaum, have produced an agreement in which the association will turn over the Sausalito Carousel and $2,000 in cash to repay in part the $10,000 in lodging tax funds given the group.

City officials will store the carousel until it can be sold. However, the cash and carousel’s sale probably won’t be enough to completely satisfy the $10,000 debt, Watts said.

“This is an interim step we hope will accomplish the city’s goal of getting back (all) the lodging tax monies,” he said.

“We will also have a formal agreement reflecting the terms. Both sides are working to resolve this.”
