PORT HADLOCK — A mother awoke her husband and three children to black smoke filling their home Monday morning.
“Just picture this: My wife dead asleep, me dead asleep and our kids dead asleep,” Charlie Bowen said.
“My wife woke up and said, ‘Fire!’
“I woke up and looked around and my house was full of black smoke. It was so thick my youngest was coughing.
“We got torched,” said Bowen, husband of Stacy Bowen, and father of three children, Catherine, 4, Cole, 2 and Elijah, 1.
They were interviewed late Monday.
“We lost everything, man — everything we own,” he said.
Bowen — who has worked as a painter, has cleaned gutters and is applying for Social Security disability — said the fire broke out about 2:10 a.m. in a fourplex at 50 Old Hadlock Rd.
Laura Roberts and her three children — tenants at the other end of the fourplex — also escaped with their lives.
Mrs. Bowen said she thinks two people were involved in the fire, and authorities now have that information.
Bowen said his wife smelled diesel fuel.
