Port Angeles: Westport seeking workers from devastated Gulf Coast area

PORT ANGELES — Westport Shipyard wants to float the boats of marine-trades workers who lost their jobs to Hurricane Katrina.

The relocated employees, in turn, would help Westport launch its new 164-foot luxury cruiser at its Port Angeles yard, 637 Marine Drive, or produce other watercraft in Hoquiam and Westport.

The company could hire as many as 100 people immediately.

Some current employees have offered to open their homes to potential hurricane evacuees.

“We’re that close to making an offer to our first person,” said Chuck Hatten, human relations manager at the Port Angeles yard, holding his thumb and forefinger nearly together Thursday.

Tami Higgins, vice president of administration for the shipyard, said about 45 people could find jobs in Westport, about 15 in Hoquiam and about 40 in Port Angeles
