PORT ANGELES — A teenage driver was seriously injured when his pickup truck struck a school bus carrying six children Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 101, west of downtown.
The force of the collision crumpled the front of the Toyota pickup, and emergency workers had to use special equipment to extricate the 18-year-old driver, Shane M. Lusk, from the vehicle, Washington State Patrol Trooper Randy Gardner said.
Lusk was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with a leg injury, fractures and bruised lungs, and a hospital spokeswoman said he underwent surgery Thursday afternoon. He was listed in serious condition.
Thirteen-year-old Cari B. Lusk, Shane’s sister and the only passenger in the truck, was treated and released for her injuries at Olympic Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
