Port Angeles: Tops on school task force’s list – — – temporarily closing Franklin School

PORT ANGELES — The top suggestion of a task force looking into saving the Port Angeles School District budget $300,000 calls for closing Franklin Elementary School for about two years to kick off a renovation program.

On the option list behind Franklin is closing Monroe Elementary School unless student enrollments increase.

Those two options and several others were presented to the School Board on Monday night.

No action was taken, but the task force’s findings will trigger School Board discussions that begin with a Feb. 9 study session.

The strategy to temporarily close and repair Franklin, corner of Lauridsen Boulevard and Washington Street, would save the district about $321,000, require 462 children to change schools, and cut one principal, one secretary, two teachers and 1½ custodian positions.

Voter-approved bond money would help fund renovations to the school.

The task force was established by the five-member School Board to find a way to save the district $300,000 by changing the way district-owned buildings are operated.

The event begins with the landing of dozens of native canoes at the mouth of the Elwha River on July 31 and continues with five days of celebration on the Lower Elwha reservation west of Port Angeles. As many as 10,000 indigenous peoples are expected to take part. The public is invited to help with giftmaking sessions, scheduled daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Heritage Center.
