Port Angeles teacher arrested in child rape review

PORT ANGELES — Paul Anthony Brinkmann, an eighth-grade math teacher at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles, has been arrested for investigation of child rape and incest.

Brinkmann, 46, was booked into Clallam County jail Friday for investigation of first-degree child rape, second-degree child rape, incest and first-degree child molestation.

The case will be referred to the Clallam County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for consideration of formal charges.

Port Angeles Deputy Chief Brian Smith said the case involves one victim.

“As far as I know . . . the victim is not one of the students and not a student at the middle school,” he said.

Smith declined to provide additional comment.

“The case is still under investigation,” he said. “We don’t want to hamper our ability to gather facts by prematurely discussing the case.”

In a written statement, Port Angeles School District Superintendent Jane Pryne said: “Under the law, the teacher is presumed innocent. However, as a precaution, the district has placed the teacher on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.”
