Port Angeles students begin jazz camp today

PORT ANGELES — Four Port Angeles High School jazz students are among those at the Camp Heebie Jeebies Winter School, which begins today and ends Monday.

Kelsey Cammack, alto sax; Naomi Kuykendall, guitar; Jordan Nicolas, trumpet; and Alden Riski, trumpet, are at the school in Whitefish, Mont.

“They are going to Montana to rehearse with jazz professionals on various instruments,” said Doug Gailey, Port Angeles High School instructor and director of bands, adding that the students are joining students from California, Canada and elsewhere in Washington state.

“It is an intensive time working with people who play their instruments,” Gailey added. “There will be culminating performances with the students and faculty, including performances for local schools.

“In their free time, they can enjoy the Montana winter with ice skating and skiing and the Whitefish Winter Carnival.”

Port Angeles students have been given full-ride scholarships for the camp’s tuition, lodging, food and fees. They are paying for their own transportation.

All four have all been participating in the Heebie Jeebies summer camp at Camp David Jr. for several years.
