Port Angeles motorist involved in chase appears in court; companion released

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles woman arrested after a stolen car report triggered a multi-agency search near Peninsula College remained in jail Saturday after her first court appearance.

Stephanie Lynn Case, also known as Stephanie Boucher, 26, appeared in Clallam County Superior Court on Friday.

She had been arrested for investigation of theft of a motor vehicle and eluding a police vehicle as well as on two warrants after Port Angeles police received a report of a stolen 1993 Honda Civic on Thursday.

Bond was set at $20,100 and bail at $750.

Robert Lee Coberly, 35, who was arrested shortly after Case in the same general area, had been released from the jail Friday afternoon by authority of the prosecuting attorney, according to jail personnel.

Coberly had been booked for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle.

He was not booked as a suspect in the Thursday theft but in another that dealt with the same car, according to Deputy Chief Brian Smith of the Port Angeles Police Department.

The Honda had been reported stolen Jan. 10. The owner had come back into possession of it, said Smith, adding that he did not know how or when that happened.

Before it was reported stolen Jan. 10, an officer saw Coberly in the car on that day, and that led to development of probable cause to arrest him, according to Smith.

The owner reported the car stolen a second time Thursday morning, Smith said.

At about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, police saw two people in the Honda on Front Street after the car had been reported stolen.

When officers attempted to stop the Honda, it was driven south on Penn Street onto Sixth Street, then went off-road until it was blocked by a fence at Highland Estates, Smith said.

The two who were in the car ran, entering the wooded area in White Creek drainage between Golf Course Drive and Peninsula College, Smith said.

The Sequim Police Department dog Chase and a team of trackers located Case in the wooded area behind Peninsula College in an area cleared for power line access.

According to officers, Case was driving the stolen car.

She was taken into custody and told police her companion was armed.

Peninsula College security team members spotted Coberly and informed police of his movements until officers took him into custody at the intersection of Ennis and Seventh streets.

Officers found no gun on him, Smith said.
