Port Angeles man charged with having pipe bombs

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man found with pipe bombs in his truck was charged Friday with six counts of possession of a bomb or explosive device with intent to use for an unlawful purpose.

Eric L. Possinger, 28, was arrested early Thursday on investigation of first-degree assault for allegedly pointing a gun at his brother-in-law.

Port Angeles police found a Glock 19 handgun in the bed of the truck and were searching for the magazine when they discovered what appeared to be components for an improvised explosive device, or IED, court records showed.

Officers found six pipe bombs along with the magazine. Members of the State Patrol Interagency Bomb Squad detonated the IEDs in a remote location later Thursday.

Arraignment set

Possinger is being held on $15,000 bond at the Clallam County jail. His arraignment is set for Oct. 29 in Clallam County Superior Court at 9 a.m.

Police found a substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine in Possinger’s pants pocket, court documents showed.

Port Angeles police said Possinger was standing in the street when police arrived at 2025 W. 15th St. at about 3:30 a.m.

Possinger told police that his brother-in-law had threatened his life and that he was concerned for his sister’s safety.

The brother-in-law told police that Possinger pointed a gun at him and that he could see a laser light on him.

Port Angeles police detectives said the six pipe bombs were fused with cannon or firework-type fuses.

They were charged with a black powder substitute and smokeless gun powder, bomb squad members told police.

Port Angeles Deputy Chief of Police Brian Smith said no new evidence was found Friday.

The case is being investigated jointly by a Port Angeles police detective and a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives special agent, Smith said.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
