PORT ANGELES — The City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted Richard Headrick the city’s new mayor and named Councilman Gary Braun deputy mayor.
Headrick, who was nominated by the council’s senior member, Larry Williams, received a standing ovation after Williams handed him the mayor’s gavel.
“It’s a privilege and an honor to represent Port Angeles as mayor,” Headrick told the council, city staff and the audience at the council’s first meeting of the year.
Sequim Mayor Walt Schubert presented Headrick with a brightly wrapped gift bag containing a baseball cap with two bills pointing in opposite directions and reading, “I’m their leader. Which way did they go?”
“Sometimes it does feel that way,” Schubert joked, then emphasized to the new mayor his hopes for a continued relationship between the cities.
Headrick, a former district and municipal court judge, was elected to the council in 2001.
