Port Angeles: Golf course project must be targeted to right market, Port told

PORT ANGELES — A proposed golf course adjacent to William R. Fairchild International Airport can work — if there’s enough acreage — but must be targeted carefully to the right market, two consultants told the Port of Port Angeles commissioners on Monday.

Tom Sanford from Aviation Golf Services and Craig Martin from Martin Design Partnership addressed Port commissioners Len Beil and Bill Hannan, Port staff members and about 20 community members regarding a proposed public golf course on a 113-acre Port-owned site — known as the South Airport Industrial Properties — between the airport and Edgewood Drive.

Sanford said his company could conduct a feasibility study on the project for about $15,000 — but he has a serious concern.

In answer to a question, he said the 113-acre site wasn’t big enough for an 18-hole course, so adjacent land would have to be acquired.

About 150 acres would be a good start, depending upon the configuration, and a good 18-hole course could take as much as 180 acres, he said.

Sanford said out-of-the-area golfers will not travel to Port Angeles to play a nine-hole or “executive” course.
