PORT ANGELES — Fluoridation supporters will present a $24,000 check to the City Council tonight to help fund fluoridation of the city’s water system.
“We’ve been working on this for awhile,” said Dr. Steve Chapman, a local pediatrician and member of the pro-fluoride Clallam County Citizens for Dental Health.
“We are putting our money where our mouths are, so to speak.”
Chapman, noting that the city’s impending water fluoridation has generated controversy, said fluoridation supporters want to demonstrate “in as clear a fashion as possible” that fluoridation is good for Port Angeles.
The City Council voted 6-1 on Feb. 18 to accept a Washington Dental Services Foundation grant of up to $260,000 to fund installation of water fluoridation equipment and public education efforts.
Since then, the anti-fluoride group Clallam Citizens for Safe Drinking Water has repeatedly asked the City Council to reconsider its decision.
The group’s efforts have included a petition with 1,424 signatures and a public forum at Port Angeles High School.
