PORT ANGELES — Gregg Elwood knows what it’s like to be called out of bed to respond to an emergency.
So to recognize the sacrifice and commitment of local firefighters during National Firefighters Week, the retired U.S. Navy medic and his wife, Sonya, on Friday donated two matted and framed pieces of art to the Port Angeles Fire Department.
One print shows a firefighter with wings, with a police officer and medic in the background.
The other piece includes two prints depicting emergency responders on Sept. 11, 2001.
“Knowing all that every man and woman who are firefighters and paramedics give daily, we want them and our local community to never forget their willingness to sacrifice for us,” Sonya Elwood said as she and her husband presented the art to firefighters at the department.
Fire Chief Dan McKeen thanked them for the gift and, speaking for the department, said: “Everybody enjoys the job that they do, because they enjoy serving others.”
