PORT ANGELES — Daishowa America will temporarily shut down for a week beginning Nov. 5 because of too much unsold inventory — and will permanently close its wood-chip plant as of Dec. 31.
Daishowa made the announcements in a message put on a chalkboard in a production area at its Ediz Hook plant west of downtown Port Angeles, said company employees who asked not to be identified.
Daishowa, which makes telephone book paper and is Clallam County’s largest private employer, has about 280 employees.
About six jobs will be eliminated when the chip plant closes.
Employees will be off without pay during the week of Nov. 5-9, though one employee said he was told Daishowa may offer “non-production-related work” to employees who want it during the period.
