Port Angeles council vacancy now has four applicants

PORT ANGELES — With less than a week to go before the application deadline, four people have submitted letters of interest for the Port Angeles City Council vacancy vacated Wednesday by Lauren Erickson.

Planning Commission Chairwoman Cherie Kidd and former Planning Commissioner and land developer Patrick Downie of Volunteer Chore Services have submitted letters in the past week.

They join Peninsula College management and marketing professor Mike Sims and online publisher Peter Ripley, who submitted letters earlier.

Mayor Karen Rogers has said letters of interest are being accepted and a timeline for the selection process will be announced at the June 6 City Council meeting.

The process will include interviewing all applicants in public, she said.

Who’s eligible

Anyone eligible to run for City Council — a registered voter who has lived within the city limit for at least a year — is eligible to submit a letter of interest, Rogers said.

Letters of interest should be addressed to the City Clerk, City of Port Angeles, 321 E. Fifth St., P.O. Box 1150, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

The appointee will serve the rest of Erickson’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2007, and would have to run in the November 2007 election to retain the seat past then.
