Port Angeles council to select mayor Jan. 15

The Port Angeles City Council will select its mayor and deputy mayor for the next two years at its first meeting of the new year.

The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 15 in the council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

Mayor Karen Rogers and Deputy Mayor Larry Williams were elected to their current positions in January 2006.

That council included Gary Braun, Lauren Erickson, Grant Munro, Jack Pittis and Betsy Wharton, who had defeated Richard Headrick in the November 2005 election.

The current council features three who were elected in November – Dan Di Guilio, Cherie Kidd and Don Perry – in addition to Braun, Rogers, Wharton and Williams.

Under the city’s council-manager form of government, the mayor is elected for a two-year term from within the ranks of the council’s seven members.

City Manager Mark Madsen handles the city’s day-to-day business.

The mayoral position is largely ceremonial, running the City Council meeting and serving as the council’s spokesperson and the city’s official representative at special events.

The deputy mayor fills in during the mayor’s absence.

Council members receive $500 a month while the deputy mayor receives $550 a month and the mayor receives $600 a month.
