Port Angeles business leaders fear a federally proposed $3 user fee on ferry passengers from Victoria could have a dramatic effect on the Peninsula’s tourist-driven economy.
The fee, which the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service is proposing to pay for heightened border security, could mean the difference between a family spending money in Port Angeles or paying for a ferry crossing, some say.
“It could be devastating,” Louann Yager, Port Angeles Visitor Center director, said.
INS wants to collect $3 from every man, woman and child ship passenger crossing into the United States from Canada, Mexico and U.S. territories and possessions, according to the April 3 Federal Register.
