State Department of Transportation and Lower Elwha Klallam tribal officials will meet today to continue negotiations to resume full work at the Port Angeles graving yard site.
Officials have been negotiating for six months how to restart construction of the dry dock for building Hood Canal Bridge pontoons and concrete anchors. Work was halted last August when Native American remains and artifacts were uncovered during excavation.
Today’s closed-door meeting will also include officials from the Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Negotiations include how Native American remains and artifacts found at the 22-acre site should be treated.
