PORT ANGELES — Afternoon downpours didn’t keep hundreds of people from turning out at the fifth annual Airport Day at William R. Fairchild International Airport.
As the rain poured down, so did three skydivers from the Sequim Skydivers Club for a demonstration.
Later, 13 vintage military aircraft with the Cascade Warbirds, filling the sky with roaring motors, were framed by a streak of lightning as they circled the runway.
“It’s been a great day,” said Al Ives, a pilot from Port Townsend who took cover in a hangar during the Warbirds fly-by.
“We’re fliers from way back, so anytime there’s a gathering of airplanes, we’re there,” Ives’s wife, Lee, also a pilot, said.
The daylong event drew an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 people who came to see the flight demonstrations, listen to talks by the Tuskegee Airmen and women in aviation, view dozens of aircraft on display, and soak up the ambiance.
