Police chief candidates get a taste of Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES – The size of the city and the beauty of the ocean and mountains attracted the out-of-town candidates for the police chief position, they said Thursday night.

Four of the five out-of-town candidates for the Port Angeles Police Chief position got a taste of the town during a meeting with the public on Thursday.

About 50 people, including elected city officials, public safety committee members and off-duty police officers, met the candidates.

Today, six candidates for the chief’s position will be interviewed by a panel of prominent citizens, the city’s department heads and a panel of officers from the Port Angeles Police Department.

That includes Acting Chief Terry Gallagher, who took over after Tom Riepe retired in May.

Others are:

  • Chief Richard Bull from Ripon, Calif.

  • Capt. Paul Crain of Concord, Calif.

  • Chief Alberto Melis of Waco, Texas

  • Chief Raymond “Fred” Savage of El Reno, Okla.

  • Chief Don Lanpher of Aberdeen, S.D.

    Lanpher could not attend the Thursday night event at the Vern Burton Center.

    His flight to Seattle was canceled Thursday because of stormy weather over the plains states, said City Manager Mark Madsen.
