PORT ANGELES — While Laura Bush treks through Olympic National Park with friends this week, local businesses are sending a welcome to the first lady — and hoping for a visit.
At Frugals, the fast-food drive-through at 1520 E. Front St., manager Bob Beausoleil has posted a greeting message to Mrs. Bush on a signboard.
“I haven’t seen her and I would definitely roll out the red carpet if she came by,” Beausoleil said Tuesday. “I’d buy her a burger, how ’bout that? And her crew, for that matter.”
At nearby Something to Crow About, a gift shop at 1017 E. Front St., owner Cathy Smith wrote “Welcome first lady and friends” on a sign in front of her business.
“I wanted her to feel welcome on the Peninsula and am hoping we might have a visit from her,” Smith said.
Mrs. Bush arrived in Port Angeles on Friday for a weeklong vacation of hiking in the national park.
President Bush did not join her and continues to attend to matters of state.
