Peninsula College names Student of Year

PORT ANGELES — Ian Keene was named the 2011-2012 Peninsula College Student of the Year.

His selection was announced last week by Student Body President Kimmy Jones at the Board of Trustees’ monthly meeting.

Keene, a resident of Pullman, has a 3.79 grade-point average, and graduated Saturday with an associate degree.

He plans to major in environmental science at Huxley College of the Environment at Western Washington University.

Keene was nominated as the October Student of the Month.

His nominating professor, Dwight Barry, said Keene “exemplifies what it means to be someone passionate about learning; he is constantly asking me questions about course content that ranges far beyond what is required for the course, questions that demonstrate that he really understands the material and wants to know more.”

Keene volunteered as a wildlife science technician for the Lower Elwha tribe in addition to taking a full load of courses.

“Ian’s combination of ability, passion and volunteer work make him, in my mind, not just a Student of the Month, but one of the best Peninsula College students I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” Barry said.

Keene was among seven Student of the Month winners eligible for the Student of the Year Award.

The others were Jason Trammell, Nikki Brown, Huy Quoc Huynh, Anneene Catterson, Miranda Pitz and Tabitha Bare.
