OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Cool weather, rainfall and light snow during the past week continue to smother the fire on Griff Peak.
But the blaze isn’t entirely out.
Park spokeswoman Barb Maynes said Monday that the portions of the fire, which swelled to 795 acres before rain began falling last week, continues to smolder.
“It is typical for forest fires to stay smoldering for quite a while,” Maynes said.
“It can take weeks of continuous wetness to put the fire completely out.”
Monitors are watching the fire from a lookout at Hurricane Ridge, and say fire activity has been reduced with the increased precipitation.
