NEWS BRIEFS: WDFW seeks volunteers … and other items

OLYMPIA — The state Department of Fish and Wildlife is looking for volunteers to fill as many as 11 postions on the Hydraulic Code Implementation Citizen Advisory Group.

Applications or nominations must be received by 5 p.m. Jan. 16.

The group advises the department on the implementation of the Hydraulic Code (Chapter 220-660 WAC) which is designed to protect fish life.

Applications must address the following areas:

• Identifying information including name, address, telephone number, and email address.

• The candidate’s relevant experience, organizational affiliations, and reasons why they would be an effective advisory group member.

• Familiarity with Washington’s Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA) permitting program and issues with HPA implementation.

• An essay on the biggest challenges facing WDFW in permitting of hydraulic projects or on ways that WDFW can improve the administration of the HPA program.

PORT ANGELES — The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps will conduct a drill and rifle competition from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.

The competition will be held at Port Angeles High School, 304 E. Park Ave.

Cadets will compete in armed and unarmed drill, air rifle marksmanship, academics, physical strength and color guard events.

Six other teams will compete against the Port Angeles cadets; Snohomish, Oak Harbor, Arlington, Burlington-Edison, Everett High Schools and the Marysville Quil Ceda Battalion which includes cadets from both Marysville Pilchuck High School and Marysville Getchell High School.

Admission to watch the competition is free, concessions and auction baskets will be for sale to benefit the school’s NJROTC program.

School dedication

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend School District recently announced that a ceremony to dedicate the Salish Coast Elementary School will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 19.

The new elementary school opened in September.

The school at 1637 Grant St. is on the site of the old Grant Street Elementary School.

The public is invited to attend the ceremony and tour the new facility.

The building will be open for self-guided

tours and there will be guided tours after the dedication ceremony.

Speakers scheduled to give remarks at the ceremony include Superintendent John A. Polm, Jefferson County Commissioner Kate Dean, Port Townsend School Board of Directors Vice-chair Jennifer James-Wilson, Port Townsend Mayor Deborah Stinson and state Rep. Mike Chapman.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Rev. Simon de Voil and Aaron English will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The concert will be held in the Unity Spiritual Enrichment Center, 3918 San Juan Ave.

Tickets are $5 to $20.

Supper and show

PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula Evangelical Friends Church will host “Supper and a Show” at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Friends will serve homemade soup, bread, rolls and homemade cookies at Friends Church, 1291 N. Barr Road.

During dinner they will show the 2015 documentary “Living Waters: Intelligent Design in the Oceans of the Earth.”

This family-friendly film screening is free and open to the public.
