NEWS BRIEFS — Stevens students honored … and other items of interest

PORT ANGELES — Twenty-four Stevens Middle School students recently were selected as Students of the Month for September and were honored at a luncheon at the North Olympic Peninsula Skills Center.

Lunch was prepared by the center’s culinary arts students.

The seventh- and eighth-grade students were recognized by their teachers for showing respect to teachers, staff and students at school.

Students recognized were Gabriella Alice, Laila Arnorsdottir, Alisandra Baccus, Autumn Baker, Colton Barnett, Marie Burns, Ben Dotson, Kailey Droz, Louise Hagen, Ryan Hedman, Sierra Hunter, Dylan Iotte, Henry Irwin, Tanner Lunt, Rylan MacDonald, Jelena Massman, Sarah Mendez, Reese Mozer, Preetha Patel, Cassie Roark, Jadon Seibel, Casandra Shamp, Isaac Walker and Kiara West.

Paws-N-Claws meet

PORT HADLOCK — Paws-N-Claws 4-H Club of Jefferson County invites new and returning members to its first meeting of the 4-H year at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave.

This orientation meeting will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting will provide information about the 4-H Cat Project and the 4-H Program, as well as Paws-N-Claws’ club goals, plans and activities.

Enrollment packets will be available.

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

No cats will be at this meeting.

Best-seller to speak at Port Angeles Library

PORT ANGELES — New York Times best-selling author April Henry will speak at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The author of popular suspense novels, including The Night She Disappeared and The Girl Who Was Supposed to Die, Henry will talk about life as a writer and her most recent novel, The Body in the Woods.

Books will be available for purchase at the event from Odyssey Bookshop.

The Body in the Woods tells the story of three teens on their first mission with the Portland, Ore., County Search and Rescue team. Alexis, Nick and Ruby do not find the missing man with autism they are looking for but instead find the dead body of a young girl.

PAHS firewood

PORT ANGELES — Senior parents of the Port Angeles High School Class of 2015 are selling firewood to raise funds for a graduation party.

This Senior All-Night Party is a celebratory event that provides graduated seniors with a safe, supervised evening of free food, entertainment, games, sporting activities and more.

This party has traditionally been a gift from parents of these seniors.

Anyone wishing to purchase firewood that is cut, split and delivered by senior parents — at $175 per cord — can phone Leslie Perrizo at 360-452-2536.

Individuals or businesses wishing to donate wood can also contact Perrizo.

Writing a novel

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library will host write-ins from

2 p.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday in November as part of National Novel Writing Month, a creative-writing-focused program in which participants try to write a 50,000-word novel.

The library is located at 2210 S. Peabody St.

Tables, chairs, power outlets, Wi-Fi and free coffee will be provided.

No previous writing experience is necessary.
