NEWS BRIEFS — Sen. Hargrove honored for education aid . . . and other items

OLYMPIA — Sen. Jim Hargrove, D-Hoquiam, has been recognized for his work in helping more children access early learning opportunities.

Hargrove, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Ways and Means Committee, recently received a Silver Crayon Award from the Early Learning Action Alliance.

“It’s proven that kids in our state have a better chance to succeed when early childhood programs are accessible and high-quality,” Hargrove said.

“Providing the right support at the right time to the right kids is an important goal for the children in our state.”

The Crayon Awards recognize leaders who are working toward legislation that helps children during their first five years of life.

Clocks, batteries

PORT TOWNSEND — Fire officials advise that smoke alarm batteries be replaced when clocks are moved back one hour Sunday.

The time change will be at 2 a.m. that day, marking the end of daylight saving time.

If batteries were recently changed, it’s still important to conduct a monthly test of smoke alarms, said East Jefferson Fire-Rescue in a news release.

Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced at least once a year, unless they are 10-year lithium batteries.

Also replace batteries if the alarm chirps.

“Go-kits” can be checked, too. The Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management recommends that go-kits, used in emergencies, have food and supplies to last at least seven to 10 days.
