NEWS BRIEFS — RSVPs for Sunday harvest dinner in Port Angeles being accepted . . . and other items

PORT ANGELES — The Esther Chapter of the Eastern Star will host a harvest dinner at the Masonic Lodge, 622 S. Lincoln St., from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Adults eat for $12; children ages 6-10 for $6; kids 5 and younger eat free.

The dinner includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, green beans, cranberry Jell-O salad, rolls, pies, coffee, tea, lemonade and milk.

Backyard bird care

PORT ANGELES — John Gatchet, a retired superintendent of education and birding expert, will share helpful hints and advise on the care and feeding of backyard birds of the Pacific Northwest at Peninsula College’s Forks extension site, 481 S. Forks Ave., at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The talk is free and open to the public.

Gatchet is a member of the American Birding Association, the Oregon Birding Association, the Washington Ornithological Society and Olympic Audubon. He will provide information on the best food sources and where one can purchase bird food at reasonable prices.

He also will talk about types of feeders and show examples of each as well as discuss the placement and cleaning of feeders.

Jazz dinner dance

SEQUIM — A night of dining and dancing with Sequim’s Stardust Big Band and the Sequim High School Jazz Band will be held in the Sequim High cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave., on Saturday.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and music starts at 6:30 p.m.

Dinner is “Chooz-a-Pasta, Pik-a-Sauce.”

Tickets are available during school hours at the Sequim High office and at the door. They are $15 per person or $25 per couple.

The Jazz Dinner Dance, supports the school’s band program.

More than 100 students perform throughout the year in Sequim and other venues, such as the Heritage Festival in Disneyland, the Macy’s parade in Seattle and the Sequim Irrigation Festival parade.

Holiday bazaar set

SEQUIM — The Sequim PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter JC will hold a holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the foyer of Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave.

The bazaar will feature handcrafted gifts and baked goods, as well as gently used books and a raffle drawing for a rustic birdhouse valued at $150 or more.

The winner of the birdhouse that Max Flockerzie made and donated for the raffle also will receive birdseed, a bird book and braces for attaching the birdhouse to a post.

The birdhouse is on display at Rainshadow Coffee, 157 W. Cedar St., and raffle tickets can be purchased there.

Raffle tickets are $1 each and will be on sale at the bazaar before the drawing.

The winning ticket will be drawn at 1 p.m. at the bazaar. The winner need not be present.

Homebrewing event set Saturday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Angeles Brewing Supplies and the North Olympic Brewers Guild will host an American Homebrewers Association “Learn to Homebrew Day” event from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

The event is free and open to the public, and it will be held at 4017 S. Mount Angeles Road (look for the Home Brew sign).

There will be demonstrations of different ways to brew beer at home.

Singing workshop for men scheduled

PORT TOWNSEND — RainShadow Chorale is sponsoring a singing workshop Saturday for men who currently sing in a choir.

The event is at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St., from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The cost of the workshop is $15.

This workshop offers the opportunity for local male choral singers to work with Geoffrey Boers, director of choral activities at the University of Washington in Seattle.

He conducts the UW Chamber Singers, teaches graduate choral conducting and choral pedagogy, and serves as faculty adviser to the choral community at the university.

Choir conductors can also attend the workshop as a master class in conducting, including lunch with Boers, for $25. This includes observing a morning session for the RainShadow men from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A “mini-concert” for friends and families will take place during the last half-hour of the workshop.

All-you-can-eat scheduled today at Fairview Grange

PORT ANGELES — The Fairview Grange, 161 Lake Farm Road, will host their All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner & Dessert Auction at 5 p.m. today.

Adults can eat as much spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and ice cream as they want for $10. Children 12 and younger eat for free.

Attendees who bring a dessert for the auction will be charged only $5 for the dinner.

The auction starts at approximately 6 p.m.

Proceeds benefit grange activities.
