NEWS BRIEFS: Port Angeles High School cadets to take part in training Saturday … and other items

News items on the North Olympic Peninsula.

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School NJROTC cadets will take part in basic leadership training on campus Saturday.

Starting between 9 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. near the school’s main gym, a Coast Guard helicopter and crew will land on campus to participate in training with cadets for a few hours, according to a news release.

Community members are being notified due to low flying aircraft.

The next portion of the training will involve the local fire department and its ladder and hose trucks.

Cadets will have the opportunity to interact with the professionals and learn about other career options.

If the weather doesn’t allow the helicopter to land Saturday, events will shift to Sunday.

Medical symposium

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Medical Center will host a symposium for Swedish Health Network affiliates today.

The symposium will be from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Linkletter Hall at the hospital at 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles.

Jefferson Healthcare and Forks Community Hospital also are members of the network.

The agenda includes presentation of achievements of the affiliation in 2016, a discussion about endocrinology and weight management, physician recruitment, an update on telehealth technology and the next steps for the Epic electronic medical records system.

Sweaters for Veterans starts Wednesday

PORT ANGELES — Drennan & Ford Funeral Home & Crematory will host its seventh annual Sweaters for Veterans initiative from this Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 11.

The funeral home at 260 Monroe Road will collect new or gently used sweaters, warm clothing, blankets, rain gear, gloves, hats, socks to be distributed to individual veterans within the county.

Meeting slated

BRINNON — The Jefferson County Planning Commission will host an open house “meet, greet and discuss” at the Brinnon Community Center, 306144 U.S. Highway 101, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Participants can start a dialogue on what they value most about living in Jefferson County and how to make the comprehensive plan better reflect those values.

The second half of the meeting will be planning commission business, with an opportunity for citizens to verbally comment on their concerns, ideas, desires, etc., regarding the comprehensive plan and update process.

Play tryouts set to begin Friday in PA

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Community Players Children’s Theater will hold tryouts for “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4.

The play is based on based on the children’s book by Barbara Robinson.

There are roles for children ages 6-18 – nine principal, eight with a few speaking lines and extras to be angels and shepherds, as well as adult roles for four men and six women. There are also backstages roles.

Children will sing carols, but the ability to sing is not required.

The play will take the stage for four performances Dec. 16, 17, and 18.

Rehearsals will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 through Dec. 13, then shift to evening rehearsals Dec. 14-15.

There will be no rehearsal on Thanksgiving Day.

Not every actor will be needed for every rehearsal; however, everyone who is cast in a role that is rehearsing is expected to be there.

Delegation visit

PORT ANGELES — A delegation from Mutsu City, Japan, recently stayed with Port Angeles School District student hosts.

The visit marked the 21st anniversary of the Port Angeles-Mutsu City sister city and sister school exchanges.

Of special note, Tanabu High School is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The Japanese students attended class and activities with high school student hosts and visited with their student pen pals at Jefferson Elementary.

The Japanese delegation had opportunities to tour downtown Port Angeles and the natural surroundings of the Olympic Peninsula.

They also visited Victoria.

Port Angeles School District, city of Port Angeles and Peninsula International Relations Association representatives have worked together with Mutsu City schools and organizations on behalf of this visit and previous exchanges.

Unity in the Olympics

PORT ANGELES — Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle St., will host guest speaker Catherine Van Wetter at its 10:30 a.m. Sunday service.

Her lesson is titled “Heaven or Hell: Choice Point.”

Van Wetter is a spiritual practitioner focusing in the area of highly sensitive people.

She holds a master’s in social work and is trained in multiple modalities such as family constellation work, NLP (neuro linguistic programming), HeartMath and sacred ceremony/ritual.

A time for silent meditation will be held from 10 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Child care is available during the service.

Community Hu

SEQUIM — There will be a community HU song gathering in the Sequim Library’s meeting room, 630 N. Sequim Ave., from 11:30 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The event is free and open to the public.

The HU song is an ancient invocation used to open the consciousness to the light and sound of God, resulting in mystical experiences, spiritual insights and states of enlightenment and inner peace, according to a news release.

‘Day of the Dead’

PORT ANGELES — The Rev. Karen Taliesin will present a “Day of the Dead” celebration at Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1033 N. Barr Road, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

El Dia de los Muertos, or the “Day of the Dead,” is a Mexican holiday that spans three days, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2.

Families feast, dance and sing at the grave site as they share memories and welcome the spirits of their loved ones, family members, friend and pets, thought to return briefly to take part in the celebration.

The focus of the celebration is on seeing death as another stage following life, not something to be faced with fear, according to a news release.

All are invited to honor and celebrate a loved one who has died by bringing a picture or a token to place on a table in the sanctuary before the service.

Taliesin is a chaplain and pastoral care provider at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

‘Messy Church’

PORT ANGELES — Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will host “Messy Church” in the fellowship hall, 301 E. Lopez Ave., from 4:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday.

“Messy Church” is an intergenerational worship experience with devotions, a common meal and sometimes messy activities.

The theme is, “All the Saints Greet You.”

New minister

PORT ANGELES — Church of Christ, 1233 E. Front St., welcomes its new minister, Ed Burrows, beginning his ministry this Tuesday.

Dr. Jerry Dean will resign after having served for 14 years. He will continue to remain in the area.

The church welcomes all visitors.

‘Twin Birthdays’

PORT ANGELES — This year’s public observance for the “Twin Birthdays” of the founders of the Baha’i faith will occur at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, 401 E. First St., at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Baha’is of Port Angeles will join with more than 5 million others around the globe to observe the occasion.
