NEWS BRIEFS: Elwha River bridge delays expected starting Monday … and other items

PORT ANGELES — From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this coming Monday through Thursday, drivers on the U.S. Highway 101 Elwha River bridge west of Port Angeles will experience one-way alternating traffic.

During that time, crews working for the state Department of Transportation will add additional boulders to reinforce the base of the bridge’s piers and west abutment.

In October, officials found that the piers for the 90-year-old bridge sat atop gravel and not bedrock. The now-wild river was eating away at the riverbed under the bridge.

Bridge engineers are designing a new bridge on a new alignment to replace the 90-year-old bridge.

The new bridge is expected to be 36 feet wide with 12-foot lanes for vehicles and 6-foot pedestrian lanes.

The estimated cost is about $29.5 million.

The last inspection in May found that the bridge was stable.

Motorists are advised to expect delays and plan extra time into their commutes next week.
