Native plant workshops scheduled

Clallam Conservation District is accepting reservations now for three workshops on landscaping with native plants.

The free workshops will be Friday, Sept. 28, Saturday, Sept. 29, and Saturday, Oct. 6.

Except for the first workshop, pre-registration is required. The registration deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The first workshop, which will be for one hour starting at 2:30 p.m., will be held in conjunction with the Dungeness River Festival at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 Hendrickson Road, Sequim.

It’s the shortest and easiest of the three, said Joe Holtrop, conservation district manager.

The following day, a workshop will be conducted from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dungeness Recreation Area, which is off Kitchen-Dick Road.

It involves three hours of walking on about 2 miles of trails near the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge.

The third field workshop will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at Robin Hill Park, which is located between Port Angeles and Sequim off Dryke Road.

“The workshop at Robin Hill Park is a little longer than Railroad Bridge Park but not as long or difficult as the one at the Dungeness Recreation Area,” Holtrop said.

The native plant communities at each workshop site differ slightly, he said.

Workshop participants will learn about more than 25 native trees and shrubs.

Cultural requirements, landscaping values, and environmental and wildlife habitat benefits of each species will be discussed.

In addition, tips on how to plan and develop a natural landscape will be offered.

For more information or to reserve a spot at a workshop, phone Clallam Conservation District at 360-452-1912, ext. 5.
