PORT ANGELES — Samples of a substance that created a sheen on the harbor east of Hollywood Beach in Port Angeles on Saturday will not be tested, Capt. Jamie Mason, of the Port Angeles Fire Department, said.
“It appears to be an organic substance or something that is so lightweight that it will easily evaporate,” Mason said on Sunday.
Organic fuel or other substances are suspected to have caused the sheen, he said, but it didn’t pose a threat to fish or wildlife in the harbor.
The sheen stretched for more than 100 yards from Hollywood Beach to beyond the Red Lion Hotel.
“It had basically no viscosity at all, and organic sheens look very different from petroleum-based sheens,” Mason said.
Because it wouldn’t be harmful and would evaporate soon, Mason said the material wouldn’t be retrieved from the water.
Its origin remains unknown, Mason said.
