Moran celebration of life set Saturday

PORT ANGELES — Councilman and constant volunteer Jim Moran will be remembered in a celebration of life ceremony set for noon Saturday at the Port Angeles Senior Center, one of the many places where he had volunteered.

Full military honors are planned for Moran, a Vietnam War veteran, at the center at 328 E. Seventh St.

Moran died in his sleep last Friday night or Saturday morning. His wife, Marie Moran, found him in bed at about 4:15 p.m. Saturday when she returned home from a trip to see family members. He was 71.

The American Legion Riders will provide the flag line to greet arriving family members and guests.

The Marine Corps League will provide a three-shot volley rifle salute and play taps.

Cmdr. Scott Jackson, the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Air Station/Sector Field Office and Moran’s friend and fellow aviator, will present the U.S. flag to his widow.

Coast Guard members will provide the flag folding ceremony.

Moran served in the U.S. Army for five years, flying combat helicopters in Vietnam and leaving the military as a captain.

He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Medal with Palm, Air Medal with 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster. Army Aviation Meritorious Service Medal and Overseas Service Bar, said Gary Velie, ride coordinator for American Legion Riders, Chapter 29.

In lieu of flowers, Marie Moran has asked friends and admirers donate to a favorite charity, “or volunteer a few hours to help out in the community.”

Among his many volunteer pursuits, Moran helped with the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association, refereed and announced for various sports and drove a van for the Port Angeles Senior Center.

He helped transport people to the Dungeness Lighthouse and also drove the ice resurfacer when he helped with the Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Ice Village last year.

He was active with the North Olympic Peninsula Basketball Officials Association and was awarded the Washington Officials Association Meritorious Service Award.

He served on the Clallam County Economic Development Corp., board and the Lumber Traders board.

Moran began his four-year term on the Port Angeles City Council in January 2018.

A New Jersey native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting before entering the military and a master’s in human resources upon his return.

He served as the district manager in Seattle for a large East Coast financial firm for a number of years before starting his own company specializing in pension administration.

He had moved with his wife to Port Angeles in 2008.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and two grandchildren.

Kyle Zimmerman, co-owner of The Hub at Front and Lincoln streets in downtown Port Angeles, adds a new coat of paint on Wednesday to an advertising sign on the back of his building that was uncovered during the demolition of a derelict building that once hid the sign from view. Zimmerman said The Hub, formerly Mathews Glass and Howe's Garage before that, is being converted to an artist's workspace and entertainment venue with an opening set for late May or early June. Although The Hub will have no control over any new construction that might later hide the automotive signs, Zimmerman said restoring the paint is an interesting addition to the downtown area for as long as it lasts.
