Memorial services for Clallam County veterans at 1 p.m. today

PORT ANGELES — This month’s memorial for Clallam County veterans who died recently will be conducted at Veterans Park on Lincoln Street next to the Clallam County Courthouse at 1 p.m. today.

The ceremonies will be conducted by members of American Legion Riders Post 29, Korean War Veterans Association, VFW Post 1024, American Legion Riders Post 29, Marine Corps League Detachment 897 and bagpiper Thomas McCurdy.

The memorial, which lasts 15 to 20 minutes, is held the last Friday of every month.

The names of the deceased are read, their military background is noted, and a replica of the Liberty Bell in the park is rung after each name.

This is followed by the playing of “Amazing Grace” by McCurdy and a formal presentation of the flag, a 21-gun salute and “Taps.”

“All are encouraged and invited to pay tribute as this may be the last time these veterans’ names are spoken,” said Tammy Sullenger, county veterans coordinator.
